COVID-19 in India 2025
As of May 26, 2025, India has reported a total of 1,009 active COVID-19 cases, with 752 new cases confirmed since May 19. The majority of these cases are concentrated in states such as Maharashtra (209), Delhi (104), Gujarat (83), and Kerala, which has the highest number of cases compared to other states. Over the past week, 305 individuals have recovered, and there have been 7 reported deaths.
The resurgence in cases is attributed to the emergence of new subvariants, including JN.1 and NB.18, which are causing mild symptoms resembling viral fever. Delhi’s Health Minister noted that the recent surge involves a new variant presenting symptoms similar to viral fever, with no severe cases or hospitalizations reported.
Experts emphasize the importance of vigilance, as the virus continues to affect the respiratory tract. They advise against ignoring symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, runny nose, and shortness of breath. Vaccination remains effective in preventing severe infections, but its efficacy may diminish over time, necessitating continued precautions.
In response to the situation, the Andhra Pradesh government initially issued a COVID-19 advisory on May 24, recommending measures like avoiding mass gatherings and wearing masks. However, the advisory was withdrawn three days later, as the state reported only three cases since May 12, with no severe cases or hospitalizations.

- Delhi: The capital has reported over 100 active cases, with a significant increase in daily infections noted in recent days. Health authorities have emphasized the mild nature of the symptoms and urged the public to remain vigilant.
- Maharashtra: Thane has reported five cases of the JN.1 variant, contributing to the state’s overall active case count. Authorities have assured that the healthcare infrastructure is prepared to manage the situation.
- Kerala: The state has seen a rise in cases, with several districts reporting new infections. Health officials are closely monitoring the situation and have advised the public to adhere to preventive measures.
- Gujarat: Ahmedabad and other cities have reported a steady number of cases, prompting local health departments to reinforce surveillance and testing protocols.
